Elizabeth Toraya
SAVANNAH - Elizabeth Betty Toraya, age 88, a resident of John Wesley Villas, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2010 at Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.
She was born in Bridgeport, CT on August 18, 1921, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Szeman. She is predeceased by her brothers, Andy and John Seaman.
She had been a lifelong resident of Bridgeport until moving to Savannah sixteen years ago where she enjoyed her retirement with her predeceased husband of sixty-three years, Abelino Lee Toraya. Betty enjoyed a full and active life. As a young woman she was employed by American Bead and Chain in Bridgeport. She was also employed at Sikorsky Aircraft in Bridgeport as a mail clerk and by Avco Lycoming in Stratford as a secretary.
She was most proud of, and greatly enjoyed, her job with the State of Connecticut. She began her employment with the state as a typist in the unemployment office and through many dedicated years of service was promoted several times. Betty retired from the State of Connecticut Unemployment Office in 1994 after twenty plus years of service.
Betty was especially proud to be a member of The Alhambra, an organization dedicated to providing mentally challenged children the opportunity to attend and participate in events and functions. She enjoyed knitting, especially afghans, because she made sure that everyone in the family had one. Her family was the greatest joy of her life. She truly enjoyed family parties and celebrations.
Betty is survived by her three beloved children, Carol Taylor of Seymour, CT, Lee Toraya, and his wife Rachel, of Savannah, GA, and Robert Toraya, also from Savannah. She is also survived by five grandchildren. Pamela McCuen, Thomas Taylor, and Lee Taylor, all from Connecticut, as well as Lee Toraya, Jr. and Stephanie Adamson, both from Savannah; ten great-grandchildren, Dean Jr., Andrew, Lauren, and Tommy, from Connecticut, and Tyler, Cole, Paige, Ethan, Ashley, and Layla from Savannah; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her loyal "Grand-dogs" Lucy and Margie.
Betty was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Savannah.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. There will be a Rosary Service at 6:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church.
Interment will follow in Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made to St. James Catholic Church, 8412 Whitfield Ave., Savannah, GA 31406 or to a charity of choice.
